Depauw University Fountain

In October 2003 DePauw University inaugurated this permanent outdoor sculpture. The complex, made of cast concrete with stone and ceramic tile ornament, includes a fountain and sunken seating circle. The sculpture garden combines two very different sculptural elements that complement each other but create separate and distinct areas within the site. Bowen has altered the existing landscape to create a gently rolling terrain. A pathway cuts through the site in a bold diagonal swath. Small classes or intimate gatherings can be held outside in the circular concrete seating arena sunk into a hillside. A water element with seating around it creates a place for quiet contemplation on the other side of the diagonal path. The overall forms are simple, elegant and are made in subtle shades of grey and white industrial concrete. An overall ornamental design of inlaid black beach stones and tiles hand made by Bowen unifies the site.
